Singing

I was blessed with a mediocre singing voice. I can carry a tune and I like to sing, but I do not have any false illusions about my singing ability. On the other hand, all of my children somehow inherited very good singing voices. We all know that Grandpa Folkman was an actor and singer early in his life, so the genes are there somewhere.

Clint did not really pursue music, although he has been more interested in his 20's. Clint and Melissa sang with another couple in their Sacrament meeting a few weeks ago and it was very fun to go and listen to them. Caroline was in 9th grade choir and that was the end of her formal singing experience. Jacque has always loved and pursued music. She and Dallin sang for me on Mother's Day at my request. She did not love her High School choir experience, quit early and pursued her own thing. I love listening to my children and I beg them to sing at every opportunity. Which brings me to last night.

Monday evening, Kate told me that she had meetings and would not be home after school the next day, so she would see me at the choir concert. What choir concert? (She thought that I had a schedule and forgot to mention it during family planning meeting.) Bryce was in Grand Junction, so I went to the concert alone without camera or anything. As I walked in the door I saw Kate's friend Sarah, who said to me, "Are you excited about Kate's solo?" Kate has a solo?!

Sure enough, as the lights dimmed Kate was standing alone on the stage. She began singing. She sounded beautiful. Soon she was joined by another girl and boy--and then slowly the entire choir started singing as they walked from the audience onto the stage. At the end of the song, Kate stepped forward and sang alone once more. For a mother who loves to hear her children sing, it was magical. Cousin Robin was in attendance and luckily got most of it on video.

Kate's lame excuse was that the teacher had only decided on her for the solo that day. What is wrong with texting? I would have gathered the troops and been there in force to support and listen. As it happened, I sat alone and enjoyed a very private "mother moment."

Christy--I only know what my Mom told me which was--her Dad traveled with an acting group before he was married. Maybe my sisters or Tim know more. We probably should start collecting our memories and get it all recorded!
